Environmental Impact

Our Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

As an integrated technology provider that enables some of the largest volumes of postcards, letters, and checks to be printed and mailed both in the US and around the world, we are keenly aware of the environmental impact that mail has on our planet. From the beginning, it has always been Lob’s commitment to minimize our footprint and seek out new, creative ways to deliver sustainable, eco-friendly initiatives to our customers. As our company grows, so does our responsibility, our commitment, and our desire to continue our efforts towards a greener, more sustainable industry.

To proactively decrease our impact on global deforestation, Lob partners with Eden Reforestation Projects to plant trees wherever they are needed most in Ethiopia, Madagascar, Nepal, Haiti, Indonesia, Mozambique, Kenya, and Central America. These plantings replenish depleted forests and support agroforestry while helping to provide sustainable jobs to local residents.

Each month, Lob offsets our paper consumption by planting significantly more trees than we depleted in the fulfillment of our print and mail products. Since November 2017, Lob has planted over 160,000 trees—more than twice the paper used for the mail sent through our platform.

“As someone who takes time and action to incorporate sustainable practices into my everyday life, it brings me comfort knowing that Lob cares about the impact we’re having on the environment and does something about it.”

Lowering Environmental Impact Through Recycled Paper

Lob proudly uses paper-stock that contains between 10% and 100% post-consumer waste (PCW) pulp fiber for all letter and postcard mailings. PCW pulp comes from paper goods that have lived previous lives as consumer goods, such as newspapers, thank you cards, and other documents.

This initiative to use paper with PCW pulp profoundly reduces our carbon footprint and prevents thousands of trees from being felled each year. It’s our hope that this change will be the first step towards increased consumption of recycled materials by both Lob and our partners.

Sustainable Paper Stock & Partner Certifications

Lob prioritizes working with partners that share our values around sustainability, especially when it comes to raw material sourcing, energy efficiency, and waste management. All of the printers in our network work with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified stock—paper that has been certified for sustainable harvesting and production.

90% of the printers in our Print Delivery Network are FSC Chain of Custody Certified and have verified practices in place to ensure the sourcing and handling integrity of sustainable materials throughout the supply chain.
